Pipe OrganMusic Program

The music program at First Pres. (First Presbyterian church) has three volunteer groups: Chancel Choir for high school students and adults, Carol Choir for students in grades 3-8, and Chime Choir -- an intergenerational group ringing handchimes.

The Chancel Choir meets every Sunday morning at 9:15 before the worship service starts for practice and sings at most worship functions. There is a sense of friendship each morning when the choir works through the day's music and future songs. The choir meets during between September and May often getting together during the summer to put on a piece of music or two. You are invited to join the choir and share the experience of friendship through God's ministry of music.

Last summer the Once in a Great While Men's Choir made its debut singing an a cappella arrangement of Steal Away to Jesus. There are hopes for a return engagement in August.

Naturally the women expressed a desire for equal opportunity, so there are plans for the Every Now and Then Women's Chorus to sing for the first time--also in August.

The sanctuary has Goulding & Wood/Holloway pipe organ played by Michael Alexander. He was a keyboard major at the Indiana University School of Music and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree there. He is a music technology buff, so the congregation often gets to hear other instrumental and rhythmic sounds when he takes advantage of the midi capabilities that were added when the organ was renovated in 1994.

Mary Hardesty is Director of Music, and conducts the singing groups as well as the handchime choir. She has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Indiana University with a vocal/choral major. She also has ten years of experience teaching music in public schools.
