Malawi Well ProjectMalawi Well Project

We can hardly imagine taking our water from muddy and polluted pools for any reason. But that is all that there is in the rural areas of Malawi, Africa.

The result is a staggering infant mortality rate. Over half of the children die before the age of five and those who survive are in poor health.

Dysentery is a major problem that results from dirty water. Once people live through childhood, they then face the all too frequent occurrence of dysentery and the potential of death.

The solution can be found in the clean water that is just fifteen to twenty feet below the surface of the ground and is not that difficult to obtain. A well is dug, the bottom is lined with bricks, the sides are lined with concrete, and a concrete cover is placed on the top. A very simple hand operated pump is installed to get the water out of the well. And, thus, a village of 300 to 475 people have clean water.

Because the digging of the wells is done by the villagers and volunteers from Illinois, a well can be constructed for just $300. Also, because of the simplicity of the well and pump, the villagers are trained to maintain the well for years of clean water.

The church is a part of bringing clean water to the villages of Malawi and of bringing good health and a longer life to the people.
