LIFE was started by the Rev. Stephen B. Braden when he came to First Presbyterian in 1986. It was a goal of the church at that time to start a community food pantry where the needy could come for assistance. With the help of other ministers in the area the non-profit, non-denominational food pantry was created. Today LIFE serves all of Lawrence County with offices in both Bedford and Mitchell. They provide needy families and individuals with emergency food asistance, social services, and referral services among many other items. The Bedford First Presbyterian Church supports LIFE in many ways. Weekly and monthly donations of food and monetary gifts are taken up during the worship service as an offering to God and are immediately forwarded to the LIFE office in order for them to be used as soon as possible. In addition to that, the youth group participates in an annual fundraising event for LIFE called the Christmas Tree Fantasia. The Christmas Tree Fantasia is an event in which local churhces and businesses decorate trees that are given to LIFE and then auctioned off with all the proceeds going towards LIFE. The youth group has participated for many years and have always pulled off interesting designs including a Noah's Ark theme, a Disney themed tree, and a Millenium tree.
